Balustrade Testing

In the past few years glass & steel balconies and barriers within the industrial, residential and retail sector have become increasingly popular. All of these need to be tested to the relevant BS and BS EN standard.

The standards and loads for the balustrades and barriers all depends on the location and intention of the product; STS-UK Group offers a comprehensive testing regime. This can include the following information:

  • Pre Installation Testing (In Our Laboratory or)
  • Site Testing
  • Balustrade Calculations
  • Full Reports/Cross Examination with BS and BS EN Codes

There are several different types of balustrades and barriers, STS-UK Group can offer testing for the following and more:

  • Glass - Free Standing (Laminated and Toughened)
  • Metal Framed (Typically Stainless Steel) with Glass In-fill
  • Metal Framed Metal In-fill (Typically Stainless Steel); or
  • Balcony System Balustrades
  • Balcony - Ornate Cast Iron
  • Balcony - Ornate Natural Stone/Brick/Block

Standards for the testing of these balustrades and barriers include:

  • BS 6180:2011; Barriers in and about Buildings Code of Practice
  • BS 7818:1995; Specification for Pedestrian Restraint Systems in Metal
  • BS EN 13374:2013+A1:2018; Temporary Edge Protection Systems

All monitoring of deflections and load is undertaken electronically; other qualities may also be measured where relevant; such as crack widths, strain and temperature. All monitoring undertaken by STS-UK Group is carried out electronically to a high accuracy, logging back to a bespoke central logger. This means that no data is missed and detailed graphs and reports can be issued to the client.

We have carried out a large number of tests for a wide range of clients. Both site testing and laboratory testing have been undertaken. For the majority of our clients'; laboratory testing is undertaken to help with design loads and improvements on the systems.
